Willow Control - Lotteries Heritage and Environment Committee Funding

The Lotteries Heritage and Environment Committee funded a programme of willow control in the ARC Hunua Ranges Regional Park. The Mangatawhiri stream and wetland had a severe willow problem that teams of volunteers undertook work on during the summer of 2007-2008. Early signs look encouraging but full results will become apparent in the spring 2008. Willows are a pest plant in New Zealand waterways that block the normal flow and cause flooding, their plant litter also impacts the naturally occurring ecosystems of the waterways.
